The first American Football cards were included in cigarette packets in the late 1800s. Along with baseball cards, American Football cards began gaining popularity after World War II. In 1948 two companies Bowman Gum and the Leaf Candy Company started producing their first NFL card sets ( around 100 card sets ). Bowman was bought out by the Topps Chewing Gum Company in 1956 and produced their first regular American Football trading card set that same year. Topps is still a major player in the American Football trading card market today along with Upper Deck , Panini and Leaf. |
